Colorado Springs is a middle-sized city, located just east of the geographic center of the state of Colorado in the United States. It has a population of 360,890 (according to the 2000 census) and is the second largest city in Colorado. At elevation 6,035 feet, it is situated near the base of one of the most famous American peaks, Pikes Peak, on the east side of the Rocky Mountains. The capital of Colorado, Denver, is 68 miles to the north.
Under the snow-capped majesty of Pike's Peak at the edge of the Rockies, Colorado Springs provides a less-crowded alternative to Denver with the same level of services. It is a year-round resort and a booming military, technological, and commercial city. Electronic, computer, mining, and aerospace manufactures are important economically. It is a popular tourist center near the site of the U.S. Air Force Academy (established here in 1958).
Colorado Springs is in central Colorado, between Denver and Pueblo along I-25.
In addition to Pikes Peak, there are many other tourist attractions in the area, including Garden of the Gods, a collection of large red sandstone formations, the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Cave of the Winds, the United States Olympic Training Complex, the American Numismatic Association, and the United States Air Force Academy. According to the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau, the area attracts some six million visitors yearly. A cog railroad takes visitors to the top of Pike's Peak for spectacular views of Colorado in every direction.
Colorado Springs has a labor force with better education and better training than the national average. And, the labor force growth rate for the next several years is expected to grow at more than 2 percent per year, creating over 4,000 jobs annually.
The military provides the area with a stable base of economic activity, employing defense, civil service and military personnel. Colorado Springs benefits light manufactures by providing low operating costs, availability of skilled and professional laborers, and sophisticated training facilities. Colorado Springs is conducive to regional administrative centers and corporate headquarters, offering them a variety of resources.
